If you’re thinking about adding solar panels to your home, one of the first questions to ask is whether your roof is ready for it. A well designed solar system can last 25 years or more, so the surface it sits on needs to be safe, strong and suitable for long term performance.
At Sheerwater Solar, we assess roofs across Surrey every day, and the good news is that most are perfectly suitable. This simple checklist will help you understand what to look out for before you take the next step.
Roof Readiness Checklist: The Key Questions Answered
Is my roof in good condition?
Does my roof face the right direction?
Is my roof pitch suitable for solar panels?
Will shading affect performance?
What is my roof made of?
How much usable roof space do I have?
Is my roof structurally sound?
Am I planning renovations in the near future?
1. What condition is your roof in?
Start with a basic visual check. Look for cracked or missing tiles, worn areas, sagging sections, or signs of ageing. A roof doesn’t need to be brand new, but it should be in good, stable condition. If repairs are needed, it’s better to do them before installation, not after.
2. What direction does your roof face?
South facing roofs generate the most energy, but east and west roofs are also very effective and often offer great value. Even split roof systems can work well. The only orientation that usually isn’t suitable is north facing.
3. Is your roof pitch suitable?
Most UK homes naturally fall within the ideal range for solar. A pitch of around 30 to 50 degrees is typically most efficient, though steeper and shallower roofs can still deliver strong performance. Flat roofs also work well with angled mounting systems.
4. Is there any shading?
Shading is one of the biggest factors affecting solar output. Trees, chimneys, or nearby buildings can all cast shadows that reduce production. A little shade doesn’t rule out solar, but it may influence panel placement, layout or the need for optimisers.
5. What is your roof made of?
Tile, slate, metal and asphalt roofs are generally all suitable for solar. Flat roofs with felt, fibre glass or membrane coverings can also work with the right mounting system. Materials like thatch, asbestos and glass roofs are not compatible. An installer will always guide you if your roof needs special consideration.
6. How much usable space do you have?
Solar panels don’t require your entire roof, but they do need a clear area without obstructions like vents, skylights or flues. Even smaller roofs can host a compact system that makes a real difference to your energy bills.
7. Is your roof structurally sound?
A strong roof is essential. During a professional survey, we check the structure beneath the tiles, the battens, the rafters and the general stability of the area. Most homes pass this step with no issues, but if reinforcements are needed, it’s better to know early.
8. Do you plan to renovate soon?
If you’re considering a re roof or loft conversion in the near future, it’s worth timing your solar installation around it. Panels can be removed and refitted, but planning ahead saves cost and avoids unnecessary disruption.
